The Taxi vs Uber war is getting crazier in Paris

The French taxis are not happy with the new competition. After forcing our government to take a decree saying Uber and the likes should wait 15 minutes before taking someone, they are now on strike. This morning they embushed a Uber car, slashed its tires, broke the windows, with passengers inside. It's possible it would have gone very bad if the Uber driver hadn't been able to get out of the trap.

Other reports (on twitter indicate) that they embushed other cars, stole passengers cellphones and threw rocks on Uber cars (while they were travelling on the motorway...) as well as on non-striking taxis.

This thing is getting out of hand...

I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure the best way to get and keep customers is not to attack and assault them when they are using the competitors service. Just saying.

Chicago prohibits Uber to enter the Airport taxi stand and when you want to go to the burbs the city taxis will get you in the car and not say anything about the fact that they are charging you double until you are halfway to your destination.

The taxi driver last I was there got pissed because I didn't tip him.

My response "you just charged me double what Uber would have. Your lucky I am paying you at all."

So, basically, they're violently protesting competition? I'm quite new to this topic, do the taxi drivers have a point?

A comic book about a poison drank by Nazi soldiers during WWII which renders them indestructible.

An American company offering people to order a ride using their smartphone. It's more expensive than regular taxis but you get to ride in an high end car, with a courteous driver, and you're sure to get a ride.

Oh ok thanks! They would never allow such a thing in Canada I am guessing.

It's standard "old guard" trying to defend a bad business model. It's like the music industry getting pissed that no one buys CDs anymore.....it's not that no one buys music, they just don't do it the old fashioned way.

They view Uber as unfair competition because taxis have to pay a huge fee for their licence which Uber doesn't need. You also have to know that normally the licence is free but since there is a limited number of them, the taxi union artificially increased the price. And also because with Uber you get a real driver, not an asshole and they feel they can't compete.
They got the President to sign a decree saying that Uber and the likes would have to wait 15 minutes after order to take a passenger (except if you're staying at 4 or 5 stars hotel...). They are not happy with that, and ask for a 30 minutes, and for Uber to take only 60+€ fares.
Yeah, they are completely stupid. And since the decree some taxi companies (like G7) launched their own smartphone app and a premium car service. Yep, just like Uber...

This is a fascinating story, it's a shame it will probably get lost in all the NAIS coverage. I tweeted Patrick and the big-shots (hey that could be a band) your link, so we shall see if they pick it up.

Yeah, I've started using Uber for almost everything here now. If I have to go burbs to airport or vice versa I'll just call American Taxi. Their flat rates aren't too bad.
